Punk - then and now

What’s some good punk rock in 2018? I don’t have a clue anymore. I liked a lot of it some years back. Here are a few personal favorites (there are plenty, to be honest, but to get the ball rolling).

Yeah. So, what’s good in 2018? And what are some all time favs?

A Giant Dog rocks. great live show, too.

Turnstile fucking destroys (early work much better, though). the breakdown on this track is very Bad Brains…

Belmont is pure cheese and suck live but I still love them

oh man, you had me at ‘cannons and tanks’

They’re not for everyone, but Converge are still going, still amazing, and as far as I’m concerned, in the conversation for GOAT at this point. They just put out a really short, nasty 7" that’s well worth 7 minutes of your time. Letting their punk side hang all the way out.

Super Unison - Drive Like Jehu (obv) esque stuff

Priests from DC are a tad overhyped and v Pitchfork etc etc etc but they’re great - surfy chinstrokey new wavey noisy all in different places

Looking forward to the new Deafheaven - the only semi-shoegaze-revival band that are any cop. must be the black metal screamo post rock twinkly indie bits that keep it together.

And can anyone tell me what on earth happened to Grass Widow? I absolutely adore everything they’ve done but they seem to have unceremoniously dropped off the face of the earth.

#5

all i know is that against me are really good. maybe a bit soft musically for yr tastes but great lyrics

#6

I like them! Against Me are good, been listening to the “baby, I’m an anarchist” song a few too many times over the years. Thanks for all the suggestions here, folks, I’m gonna check them out.

I remember hearing Lightning bolt for the first time and it really making my ears prick up.
It might be a stretch to call this more math- rocky stuff like LB and Hella punk but it scratched an itch for me that at the time, current punk hadn’t scratched for years.

Here’s Brian from Lightning bolt playing an incredible solo drum experiment in his apparently ‘hilarious’ attic as Black Pus

love love love love

Sleaford Mods aren’t exactly punk in musical terms, but there’s a passing resemblance and it is the closest thing I’ve heard to a modern punk spirit expressing the rage and frustration of life in the modern economy.

Sleater-Kinney and Minutemen are the big evergreen punk bands for me, I go back to both of them a lot.

Show me the body are a wicked hardcore band from NYC. I don’t listen to punk etc. normally but I think they are a great example of how it can still be relevant.

#15

@topcat uh, wow, this shit is nutty. thanks for the reco!

I don’t know much punk at all, but always liked the bits I find. Following this to find some stuff to listen to. But the Mods are sheer class and totally have that punk vibe about them. Plus they did that Mekon album that is almost entirely built on Sex Pistols loops.

I had to leave their gig a song in because my wife called to say she was going into labour. I bought her a pair of Sleaford Mods knickers from the merch stand on me way out.

#17

I’m sure she really appreciated those when you presented them to her at the hospital.

Ha ha. There was a bit of an in joke in the purchase. My first was born premature and random clothes were stuffed in a bag for the hospital stay as nothing was ready. One of the items was that maternity staple, a pair of sequined kickers. So rocking up with cotton briefs was a marked improvement
