Psychedelic Dance Music

#1

What does psychedelic dance music mean to you? Where do you find the most psychedelic dance music (regions, genres, scenes, etc)? What makes dance music psychedelic? Who are your favorite psychedelic dance music DJs and producers?

I think dance music has a real leg up on other genres when it comes to psychedelia as dancing lends itself to psychedelic experience regardless of the style of music. On the dancefloor it is expected that you will lose yourself in the environment, turn inward and let the music flow through you, which is a mindset that lends itself well to psychedelia in my opinion. Great rock acts are able to achieve this as well, but I feel those acts are the exception and not the norm.

Here’s a few examples from different scenes -

man there’s so many types…describing PDM (psycadancemusic) is nearly as difficult as describing the psychedelic experience itself.

before i took any psychedelics, this was PDM to me…looping, trippy, distorted, energetic, more about the words and noises sort of glurping and globbing together than anything else

then starting to go out there on my own, finding specific sounds that matched feelings i had had whilst tripping and connecting with that at music festivals…

later finding more psychedelia in bedroom listening, songs that were spacious and etherial and for that felt trippy and psychedelic, once again recalling feelings of experienced spaciousness due to lil fungal friends…

then as a dancer as well of a tripper lots of what might be called psychedelic house with slow builds and sort of a balance of the spaceousness of the previous two tunes but with a floor oriented beat. proper afterparty stuff.

theres so much more too, all the principe and comeme stuff feels super psychedelic…sounds from cumbia, batida, zouk, anything looping and weird. havent even touched on techno so thats a whole world of its own. for me it all goes back to early 90s uk acid sounds but for others its multigenerational, goes back to south american or african roots…

here’s a good track that feels to me a modern PDM thats fun times…some south amer / afro influences for sure…
