Pirate radio: where has it gone? what is it now?

#1

answers might include “internet radio”, “further underground due to heavy policing”, “it still exists wot u talking about?!”

certainly asking about where it has gone physically but also interested in where that energy has gone now that the outlet doesn’t (to my knowledge) exist (within club music, at least)

Internet radio has a very different vibe/demographic, that’s for sure.

I would scope the UK Hardcore forum for chat of this.

But yeah, it’s basically gone from what I understand and in this internet radio you speak of. And I’m also very interested to know where that energy has gone too…I think to either making ends meet to keep an artistic practice viable or social media, to speak in very broad strokes.

u can’t have pirate radio without cockney/ends/north-east banter.

so, as an outsider to this whole phenomenon, my only real exposure to “pirate” radio has been limited to RinseFM (which, obviously, has since gone legit, hence my access to it).

at one point a few years back, I was listening to the stream nonstop; loved a ton of the regular DJs…Slimzee (obvs), Radford (to quote Butterfly on Guru, “it’s all about the voice”), Plastician, Krystal Klear, even the endearingly goofy Sam Supplier (his energy is contagious)…plus, of course, all the B2Bs and label showcases like Boxed, Hessle, Swamp, Logos/Mumdance, too many others to mention…even the poppier end of the spectrum from the morning shows forced me to break out Shazam…

anyway, my listening habits eventually fell off and the few times I’ve returned to it in recent months have not resulted in extended listenings. forgettable pop and mumbly rap seem to dominate the air nowadays…I just can’t get into it.

so, my question is, am I missing something? what happened? is listening to this station considered lame? has it always been lame and I was too uncool to know otherwise?

I see everyone mentioning NTS but I’m not really trying to fall asleep when I turn on the radio. I want hi-NRG fun shit. what to do, folks?

would dublab be consideratable here?
