Gear / Tech thread
Current Setup:
GF’s gear is on the left (Korg Electribe EMX1, Yamaha DX200, Elektron Octatrack), mine is on the right: Elektron Digitakt, Cyclone TT-303, Roland JP-8080.
Nice set ups!
no photo, but MPC2000XL - Akai S2800 - Boss Dr 202 - Korg Monologue - Soundcraft desk and a whole lot of wires.
Oh man! How have you liked the lil Boss? I’ve been thinking of grabbing a smaller drum machine to simplify things/sketch out beats. The Digitakt has a lot of great functionality, but sometimes I can get a little myopic.
I also kind of want to do a version of this classic youtube vid, but on a bike:
That video is great you should give it a crack.
The Boss is real good man, lot’s of the classic kits from roland in there and the bass sounds are nice and thick.
I use it all the time, I let the MPC trigger it. I think it cost me £100 and was well worth it, it’s an under rated bit of kit.
bit of a long shot probably, but does anyone have any old decks with a mixer or anything they could sell me? i had some old numarks back in the day and want a new set of decks any age really.
cheers
I’ve just bought an old multitrack (zoom mrs 1608) and I’m dead pleased with it. I’ve used Reason on the laptop for years and always felt a bit unfulfilled with that and the various DAWS that I’ve played with. Really nice to get away from the computer, it’s not for everyone but I should have done it years ago.
Along with that I’m currently using a Monologue, a (much maligned) Yamaha CS1X ( it’s a bit of a 90s cheesebox but has its uses.) And my beloved SP303 which I couldn’t live without.
Got a few guitars, mics and a bass too.
I’m going to work on making some electro - acoustic (if that’s the right term) music with this setup. I’ve got something in my head that’s somethig a bit like Ween and The Beta Band with this gear.
My Lyra 8 just came in the mail today. Can’t wait to make some crazy soundscapes. First thing I noticed with I took it out of the box is how well it’s made for the price point. Heavy metal enclosure, very sturdy knobs and the packing job was top notch.
Hey not sure if this is the right spot, but does anyone have a suggestion for a MIDI splitter? I know MIDI Solutions makes them but I was hoping to get something for under $50.
Hey seentwagg, if you decide to go with the midi solutions one be warned that not all interfaces/gear can actually send power over midi thus meaning it won’t work. I found that out the hard way when I bought one not long ago and had to return it as my focusrite Saffire pro 40 couldn’t power it. Went for the Kenton midi thru 5 in the end and so far it’s been spot on, build quality was a lot more solid as well so would definitely recommend it.
EDIT: here’s a list of gear that the midi solutions one reportedly won’t work with (wish I’d found this before!)

Cool thanks Rctthings. I’m sending MIDI from an old Korg Electribe, which seems to be not on the MIDI solutions issue list. I’m gonna look into Kenton as well.
No worries mate. One other thing I forgot to mention: if you go for the midi solutions box, definitely worth getting the “multivoltage” one as it works with both the older midi standard and the newer one (so should play nice with pretty much everything). Also, the only option I’ve seen under $50 is building one yourself if you happen to be handy! Meant to be fairly straightforward but I’m pretty clueless about DIY stuff so couldn’t guarantee it.
Lately found myself lurking on synth websites a lot and spending money on different gears. So here’s the question: what’s the one gear that can kill GAS?
Anyone one here into eurorack? Just got into it last year, filled my first 6U 84hp case now and trying to prevent myself from getting another one
+1 for the Kenton THRU 5 here. Very solid and the timing is pretty tight. There might be a bit of drift in the timing (a few ms back and forth) but really it’s hard to say if it’s the Kenton or the idiosyncrasies of the units it’s pushing clock to.
- Roland JD-Xi (hybrid synth/drum machine)
- Korg Electribe ESX (sampler)
- Soundcraft Signature 12 (mixing desk)
- Korg Volca FM (digital synth)
- Korg Volca Keys (analog synth)
- EHX Cathedral (delay/reverb)
- (not pictured): Arturia Drumbrute (drum machine)
My workflow begins with the internal sequencers of each instrument. I create and save patterns/loops in each device. Then I play with them, leaving lots of room to improvisation. Of course much action takes place in the mixing desk. I’m currently using 3 channels for percussions and percussive loops, 3 channels for synths and 2 channels for the effects. The Korg Electribe ESX acts as the MIDI clock master.
I mostly play dub techno (120-130 BPM), dark psychedelic techno (140 BPM), schneckno (slow techno around 95-105BPM) and ambient music,
Just picked up a Roland SE-02 for bass duties. Probably shouldn’t have been spending almost 500 quid right now but this thing sounds beautiful.
Live setup parts to the right with an Ultranova for pads/leads and a Roland VT-3 + Zoom MS-70CDR for vocals (with a Waldorf Blofeld and a Deepmind 6 for more tweakery and lushery) with a few drops of Bitwig for added DAWness. Wires and cables are my bane. Color coding seemed like a good idea at first, been searching for glow-in-the-dark-and-on-the-stage solutions for markers ever since. (Also my first post here at 555-5555, hullo y’all!)
