DJ Koze // Knock Knock (Pampa Records)

Out May 4th

Really enjoying this, though I imagine it could be too whimsical / twee for plenty of people. There’s something really intriguing about the way he uses such familiar components, and ones which might end up as boring coffee table fodder in other hands, but gives them just enough unexpected angles to make them sound completely new again.

There’s that fine line between a deep groove and a snooze, isn’t there? And sometimes I feel like the same tracks are on either side depending on the time of day. I’ve only had a cursory listen to this one, but I definitely like the tracks with Roisin Murphy. I will admit that I still don’t quite get the hype over “Pick Up” - it’s a fun disco edit, but I can’t help but think that it wouldn’t have been hyped to quite that level if it didn’t have Koze’s name on it…

I could do without tracks 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 to be honest. On the other hand, there have been a couple of great B sides on the singles: “Nein König Nein” and “The Love Truck”.

definitely feel the same about ‘pick up’ but overall the album is really great, i can’t get enough of that very Koze’s vibe that’s between desperate melancholy, summer-ish happiness and honest straightforward humour

others such as michael meyer or even, say, joe goddard follow that line but Koze just gets so deep into that, it’s packed with emotions that seem confusingly paradoxical at first and yet when you listen to the whole album, it makes sense, kinda like… life does?

Absolutely love it. Think I like it more than Amygdala which was unexpected. It flows so well and evokes such a specific vibe throughout.

His RA feature put me onto the recent record “Steal Chickens from Men and the Future from God” by Shakarchi & Stranéus which has a very complementary vibe.
