Decayed/distorted digital tracks

#1

A thread dedicated to digital audio that’s uniquely low-quality, distorted, decayed or compressed.

To get started: WHY BE’s mix of long-lost Myspace songs

an iMovie upload of kuduro

and some early footwork

Ideally, the decay/distortion present in the song brings a new quality to the sound, rather than just removing it. Our generation’s vinyl popping.

It’s pretty much the opposite of what you’re talking about but you reminded me of this by a guy called Ryan Macguire.

http://theghostinthemp3.com/

He presents the audio data that is lost when a .wav is compressed to an .mp3 so you hear all the 1s and 0s that are taken out but not the ones that go on to become the .mp3.

The tracks he uses on this first link are ‘Fast Car’ and Suzanne Vega’s ‘Tom’s Diner’. They were both tracks used to test .mp3s when the format was being designed back in the day.

Bit more info about the project here. I haven’t read it tbh.

Hell yea love this release. I always thought these tracks would be great for if the US ever sent another Voyager record into space. Maybe alien life would better be able to understand why pop music drives us crazy when it’s in this form…
